Immunisation Programs

Influenza Vaccination

Employee absenteeism reaches its limits as the weather settles into winter with the main culprit of colds and flu spreading through your workforce. Vaccination is your best defence against influenza. The "flu season" is upon us in autumn so the time is right now to start organising influenza vaccinations at your workplace. OHP can implement the influenza program smoothly and simply into your workplace.

What is the flu?
Influenza or flu is a contagious disease caused by a virus that affects your whole body. Anyone can catch the flu.

Is the influenza vaccine safe?
The vaccine will not give you the flu as it does not contain "live" virus but merely alerts the body to the threat of the virus. Most people have no unpleasant reaction to the vaccine. The most common side affect is mild soreness at the injection site which can last a few days. People with severe allergies to eggs or egg products should not receive a flu vaccination.

Which strains have been included in this year

A/Solomon Islands/3/2006 (H1N1) (IVR-145)
A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2) (IVR-147)

Hepatitis A & B Vaccination

What is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is an acute infection of the liver caused by the Hepatitis A virus. It is mainly spread by contaminated food, water and the hands of infected people via the faecal oral route.

What is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is also an infection of the liver, but caused by the Hepatitis B virus. It is spread by blood and bodily fluids.

Who should be vaccinated?
A combined hepatitis A and B vaccine should be administered to health care workers, sewage workers, travellers to developing countries, injecting drug users, those with existing liver disease and household contacts of hepatitis B carriers.

Is the vaccine safe?
It is not recommended to have the vaccine if you have had an allergic reaction previously to either hepatitis A or B vaccines or if you are anyone who has an allergy to any of the vaccine components – aluminium hydroxide, formaldehyde, neomycin or yeast. As with any medicine, side effects can occur however Most are mild and do not last long.

Tetanus

What is Tetanus?
Tetanus is a disease caused by bacteria found in soil. Tetanus is characterised by muscle stiffness and spasm or "locking" of muscles of the jaw, neck, and limbs. It is a potentially fatal disease.

Is the vaccine safe?
Nearly all people who receive a minimum of 3 injections of tetanus-containing vaccine will be protected for at least 10 years. It is much riskier to get tetanus than it is to get the vaccine. Mild reactions may occur.
